The Department's mission is to maintain a research and teaching environment that integrates research in several subfields of physics and astronomy and infuses that research into undergraduate and graduate education. In research, we seek greater understanding of the origin and structure of the universe, and the basic interactions which govern it. We seek atomic and molecular scale understanding of condensed and biological material systems and to provide the nucleus of interaction between materials, biological, and environmental science and engineering researchers at UCR.
In teaching, we strive to inspire and impart basic understanding of the fundamental processes in nature to future scientists, educators, and informed citizens. We actively recruit and engage students, researchers, and faculty of diverse backgrounds reflective of local and national demographics. The department also strives to fulfill its role as a focal point for physics educational outreach in the Inland Empire.
